CGPA Calculator for Indian Universities — Complete Guide

Calculating CGPA in India is more complicated than it sounds — different universities use different grading systems, different grade point scales, and different percentage conversion formulas. This guide explains how CGPA works across India's major university systems.

How to Calculate CGPA (Step by Step)

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is calculated as a weighted average of grade points across all subjects:

Formula: CGPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(Credit Hours)

Example: If you scored 8 (A grade) in a 4-credit subject and 7 (B+ grade) in a 3-credit subject and 9 (A+) in a 2-credit subject — your SGPA = (8×4 + 7×3 + 9×2) ÷ (4+3+2) = (32+21+18) ÷ 9 = 71 ÷ 9 = 7.89

Always check your university's official transcript or website for the exact conversion formula used for your degree — it directly affects job applications and postgraduate admissions.

What CGPA Do You Need for Placements and MBA?

Most top companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro) require a minimum 6.0 CGPA or 60% aggregate. Mid-tier tech companies and PSUs often require 6.5–7.0. For IIM MBA admissions, a CGPA equivalent to 60–65% (or 6.0–7.0 on 10-point scale) is typically the minimum — but competitive candidates have 7.5–8.5. UPSC does not have a CGPA requirement — any percentage qualifies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to calculate CGPA from marks in India?
To convert marks to grade points: find your marks percentage in each subject, then map to grade points using your university's grading table (usually O=10 for 90%+, A+=9 for 80%+, A=8 for 70%+, etc.). Multiply each subject's grade points by its credit hours, add them all up, and divide by total credits.
What is the difference between CGPA and percentage?
CGPA is a grade point average on a fixed scale (usually 10 or 4 points). Percentage is a score out of 100. One is not more accurate than the other — they measure the same thing differently. Indian companies increasingly accept CGPA directly without conversion, but if a form asks for percentage, use your university's official conversion formula.
How does VTU calculate CGPA differently?
VTU uses a 10-point system but their percentage formula is: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. This is different from the UGC formula (×9.5) and gives a lower percentage for the same CGPA. A VTU CGPA of 8.0 = 72.5% by VTU formula but 76% by UGC formula — always specify VTU on job applications to avoid confusion.
Is 7.5 CGPA good in India?
Yes — 7.5 CGPA (on 10-point scale) is equivalent to roughly 71–75% depending on the conversion method. It clears the minimum bar for most top companies (typically 6.5–7.0 minimum) and is considered a good score for MBA applications. For IITs, 7.5+ is competitive for campus placements.
