Calculating CGPA in India is more complicated than it sounds — different universities use different grading systems, different grade point scales, and different percentage conversion formulas. This guide explains how CGPA works across India's major university systems.
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is calculated as a weighted average of grade points across all subjects:
Formula: CGPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(Credit Hours)
Example: If you scored 8 (A grade) in a 4-credit subject and 7 (B+ grade) in a 3-credit subject and 9 (A+) in a 2-credit subject — your SGPA = (8×4 + 7×3 + 9×2) ÷ (4+3+2) = (32+21+18) ÷ 9 = 71 ÷ 9 = 7.89
| University / System | Formula | Example: 7.5 CGPA |
|---|---|---|
| UGC Standard (most universities) | CGPA × 9.5 | 71.25% |
| VTU Karnataka | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 67.5% |
| Mumbai University | CGPA × 7.1 | 53.25% |
| Anna University (Tamil Nadu) | (CGPA × 10) − 0.5 | 74.5% |
| Simple multiplication | CGPA × 10 | 75% |
Always check your university's official transcript or website for the exact conversion formula used for your degree — it directly affects job applications and postgraduate admissions.
Most top companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro) require a minimum 6.0 CGPA or 60% aggregate. Mid-tier tech companies and PSUs often require 6.5–7.0. For IIM MBA admissions, a CGPA equivalent to 60–65% (or 6.0–7.0 on 10-point scale) is typically the minimum — but competitive candidates have 7.5–8.5. UPSC does not have a CGPA requirement — any percentage qualifies.
