📐 Formulas We Use

📊 Attendance %

% = (Attended ÷ Total) × 100

With ghost classes: Attended ÷ (Total − Ghost) × 100

🎯 Bunkable Classes

Bunks = (Attended ÷ Target) - Total

Future classes you can miss and still maintain target.

📅 Plan Projection

Future% = (Attended + WillAttend) ÷ (Total + Upcoming) × 100

Where WillAttend = Upcoming − PlannedMisses

How to Use This Attendance Calculator

Enter the total number of classes held in your semester and the number of classes you actually attended. Hit Calculate and you'll instantly see your attendance percentage, how many classes you can still safely bunk, and whether you're safe or at risk.

You can also toggle Ghost Classes to subtract cancelled lectures from your total, or use Plan to Miss to simulate future absences before actually bunking — so you always know your safe limit in advance.

The 75% Attendance Rule in Indian Colleges

Most Indian universities — including DU, Mumbai University, VTU, Anna University, JNTU, and colleges affiliated to UGC — mandate a minimum of 75% attendance for a student to be eligible to appear in semester exams. Some institutes like medical colleges, NITs, and IITs require 80% or even 85%.

Falling below the minimum can result in detention from exams, loss of internal assessment marks, cancellation of scholarships, or being marked short-attendance in your academic record. Our calculator supports all three common thresholds — 75%, 80%, and 85% — as well as a custom target for your specific institution.

Always verify the exact policy with your college's examination department, as individual departments may impose stricter requirements than the university default.

How Attendance Percentage is Calculated

The standard formula is straightforward: Attendance % = (Classes Attended ÷ Total Classes Held) × 100. For example, if your college has held 120 classes so far and you attended 94, your attendance is (94 ÷ 120) × 100 = 78.3% — safely above the 75% rule.

To find how many more classes you can bunk while staying above 75%, the formula is: Safe Bunks = floor(Attended ÷ 0.75) − Total. Using the same example: floor(94 ÷ 0.75) − 120 = 125 − 120 = 5 bunks remaining.

If your attendance has already dropped below 75%, our Recovery Mode calculates exactly how many consecutive classes you need to attend without a single absence to get back above the threshold.

What Are Ghost Classes?

Ghost classes (also called cancelled classes or proxy classes) are sessions that were officially scheduled and counted in your college's total class tally — but never actually conducted. Common examples include classes where the professor was absent, last-minute cancellations, or sessions marked as held during college events. Since you couldn't attend something that didn't happen, our calculator lets you subtract these from your total to get your real, fair attendance percentage.

Frequently Asked

Enter your numbers and the bunk meter tells you exactly. Formula: floor(Attended ÷ 0.75) − Total. Example: 80 attended out of 100 total = floor(80 ÷ 0.75) − 100 = 106 − 100 = 6 classes you can still bunk. If this result is 0 or negative, you have no bunks left.

It lets you simulate future absences BEFORE actually bunking. Enter how many classes remain this semester and how many you're thinking of skipping. The projection shows your future attendance and whether your plan is safe or will drop you below target. Think of it as a "what-if" simulator for bunking.

Classes that never happened — teacher absent, surprise holiday, cancelled — but your college still counts them in "total classes held." Toggle ghost classes ON and enter the count to get your REAL attendance percentage without being penalised for classes you couldn't attend.

Most Indian universities require 75% minimum to sit for semester exams. Consequences of falling below include: detention from exams, loss of internal assessment marks, cancellation of scholarships and fee waivers, and a short-attendance notation in your academic record. Some colleges allow a medical certificate condonation of up to 5–10% in genuine cases. Always check your college's specific policy.

Use the Recovery Mode in our calculator — it does this automatically. Manually, the formula is: Classes Needed = ceil((0.75 × Total − Attended) ÷ (1 − 0.75)). For example, if you've attended 60 out of 100 classes, you need ceil((75 − 60) ÷ 0.25) = ceil(60) = 60 consecutive classes to reach exactly 75%.
